Dylan was smiling more than usual, without even an effort. It came completely involuntary. He realized this when some people began to look at him and then look away nervously. Appearantly they thought his smile was one of mischief and evil. Whatever, as long as they left him and Kara alone in their own world, he couldn't be bothered.
Things were changing. He was back in class, ready to ace the finals before enjoying a summer with his Kara. He had quit smoking, though that was definitely a work in progress. Old habits die hard, all right! He'd gotten a part time job after school as a dishwasher. Pretty lame but whatever, Dylan wasn't complaining. He couldn't, especially when his art was thriving again.
In fact, things were good- too good to be true and Dylan, being Dylan, kept his eyes glancing over his shoulder, ready to spot trouble when it came. Maybe it was paranoid and pessimistic, but Dylan was only a student of his past. His past had taught him things usually aren't so great without a price- even if he did deserve a little joy. Not that his happiness ever mattered...
The pessimistic side of him shut up when he spotted Kara at her locker inbetween bells. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her cheek. "Hey." he said before letting her go to finish putting away her books. "I was thinking" he started. "Now that I have money, we need to actually go on an official date." he said. "You know, not one at mcdonald's dollar menu or the cafeteria."

What's Left Of Me Is Yours To Keep w h a t s l e f t o f m e i s y o u r s.For once in her life she actually had a reason to get out of bed, something beyond the usual dull demand of the survival instinct she'd been ruled by her entire seventeen years of life. Things were improving, though in honesty that scared her a bit. Good things never came into her life, though the few times they had, they had left or been taken away again. The thought of losing Dylan... She turned her thoughts away and entered the combination for her locker. Swinging open the door she only managed to place a few books back in their place before an arm slipped around her. A fresh tide of happiness rushed through her. Dylan. He kissed her cheek and as usual confused curious glances were thrown from student to student. They were still not used to the two being together or the fact that she was actually physically close to someone. Granted, she hadn't been used to it at first either no matter how much she adored his touch but now she'd relaxed into it.
"Hey" she said, ignoring the glances passed around the hall. "Hey" he replied as he let go of her, allowing the remainders of her books to be returned to their place in her locker. "I was thinking" he began, closing the door to her locker she looked at him, "Now that I have money, we need to actually go on an official date." Now that he had money. When he'd told her about all the things he was doing, she'd been amazed. Class, a job, quitting smoking. He knew she didn't mind whether or not he did any of it, she loved him no matter what but still he seemed determined to do it. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he spoke and looked up at him. He was the best thing in her life. "You know, not one at mcdonald's dollar menu or the cafeteria." he finished.
He was right, they had never been on an official date, she didn't mind though. She adored any time she got with him and he always seemed to manage to leave her with some memory to hold onto, something she would never forget, like the fireflies on the night when he'd kissed her. Thanks to that night and Dylan they were here now and here was something she wouldn't give up for the world. "Sounds good." she replied. It was still so hard to believe he loved her. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • "I think we're popular." People watched them as if they were the official school freak show. They were way too afraid to make comments though, at least not to their faces so he wasn't bothered by it one bit. As long as they left him and Kara alone he didn't mind being talked about. He didn't think they would gather the courage to do it, after all he did pull a gun on Blaze once in front of a crowd who had just been jeering at his unconscious body. When people think you've just acquired brain damage and you hold a gun to someone's head, they tend to leave you alone. And that's a fact! Yes, he had secured a pretty bad ass reputation appearantly. He just hoped Kara hadn't heard that pathetic story. It wasn't something he was proud of. Far far from it.
But he got the feeling that she'd still love him anyway. They way she accepted him and no one else made him feel like the most gifted, special man on the planet. They way he could get close, kiss her, hug her, and talk to her in a way he couldn't anyone else- his life had become a fantasy suddenly with her. And this was all somber too. The feelings were genuine, only able to be first exposed by being soaked by smirnoff. Oh gosh, the first time they kissed stayed in his memories and could make him sudder with an almost painful love. He didn't ever want to lose her. He loved her beautiful ivory face. She looked up at him, how in the world did they fall for each other in the first place? What did she see in him? He probably wasn't the only one asking he thought as another passerby shot a stunned glance.
She said it sounded good. He smiled. "Great. I'm thinking Catherine's Friday? Then drinks at our spot. I want to see fireflies again." he said. He could hold on to her forever but he remembered, he did have a shift in fifteen minutes. "Walk me to work?" he asked.

What's Left Of Me Is Yours To Keep w h a t s l e f t o f m e i s y o u r s."I think we're popular." She scrunched her nose slightly at his comment, the glances hadn't been missed by Dylan either, though that wasn't surprising, subtlety was not a talent of most of the students here. They were weary enough though, not quite sure whether Kara or Dylan would get annoyed and come after them and who could blame them with the reputations they had both acquired in their years here. She didn't particularly like the attention the students were paying her, the most attention she'd ever received from them was the conscious decision each one of them made to get out of her way, but now, now they were all watching her and Dylan, it was the first time they'd seen Dylan close to someone, and the first time they'd seen her allowing someone into her world. But still they kept their comments and questions to themselves so she let it go. She had Dylan, a few nosy students weren't going to ruin that for her. It didn't seem to bother Dylan either, that was comforting in a way, like he wasn't going to let her go, like she mattered more to him than what anyone else had to say. She was his and she wanted it to stay that way, though she still for the life of her couldn't figure out why he loved her. Of all the people in the world he'd picked the feared, near mute loner with no past.
The smile he gave her sent a thrill through her. He really did love her. "Great. I'm thinking Catherine's Friday? Then drinks at our spot. I want to see fireflies again." Our spot. That night had meant as much to him as it had to her it seemed. It had left so many memories floating through her head, all of them good which was odd for her, she didn't have many memories she wanted to keep but the ones with Dylan she refused to let fade away. "okay" she agreed, she wanted to see them again too. Although she wasn't going to completely give up her contact with Dylan just because other people were around, it didn't mean words were any easier. Talking was one of her fathers rules that he'd beat into her, deep beneath her skin, and she was yet to gain the courage to break it any more then necessary with anyone other than Dylan around and even then, she kept taking breaks in her speech. But she would always listen, even when nobody else cared to. "Walk me to work?" he asked. "Sure" She nodded and gently let her arms slip from his neck. I WISH I WAS A SAILOR WITH SOMEONE WHO WAITED FOR ME I WISH I WAS AS FORTUNATE, AS FORTUNATE AS ME I WISH I WAS A MESSENGER AND ALL THE NEWS WAS GOOD I WISH I WAS THE FULL MOON SHINING OFF A CAMARO'S HOOD
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Kara was probably the most quiet person he's ever known. Most find that an obnoxious turn off, but Dylan liked it. He tended to be quiet himself, but definitely no where near her typical volume. Dylan was drawn to her like a moth to light. She had a classiness no one else had and he was so happy for the blessing to be able to be close to her. To be accepted and welcomed in her arms, it was as if he'd been waiting for any kind of intimacy for so long. What's crazy is that he felt that Kara probably felt the same way.
Well, birds of a feather flock together right? It was true around this school. Innocents pair off with other innocents, drug dealers pal around with other drug dealers, it's the cycle of life of cliques. And it was true with a duo of generally disliked and avoided loners. He felt so peace around her. There was no fear around her. She was nothing to fear despite what everyone else in school thought. His mind could almost relax when he wrapped his arms around her soft skin.
'Okay.' It was funny how in so many little words they communicated. It was as if they didn't need to talk about anything, it was a different kind of intimacy that Dylan didn't know existed. Sure, he wondered if she'd ever tell him about her past but after some thought, he decided he didn't need to know. It didn't change anything to him. She agreed to walk him to work, he smiled faintly and slipped his hand into hers as they strolled down the halls. They recieved the usual glances as they did so, Dylan was growing more and more immune to them though. It used to bug him, get under his skin when he got looks or when he was completely ignored as if he were invisible.
The small fast food restuarant was only a walking distance away so once they made it outside, they went along a walking path beside the road leading there. He fought the desire for nicotine. He didn't even have a lighter, he had given it to Kara since she was so mesmerized by the flame. He looked at her and put his arm around her shoulder. "Halloween." he said when a dark stripy cat appeared, rubbing itself against their legs with a loud purr. Halloween, the cat, was a new friend they met since he started working.

What's Left Of Me Is Yours To Keep w h a t s l e f t o f m e i s y o u r s.He never seemed to get frustrated with her lack of speech, he never seemed to get frustrated with her at all. She didn't understand why, she had always frustrated everyone, including the poor psychiatrists that were assigned to her upon arrival here, and now, even herself. For the first time in her life her own silence was annoying her, though only when she was with Dylan. They didn't need the words, but that didn't stop her wanting to find them. The only trouble was, her silence was a long practised art, seventeen years in the making. And in all those seventeen years she'd been alone and always believing that she was just one of those people nobody would ever love. But now here she was with Dylan's arms around her and never wanting him to let go.
She agreed to walk him to his work shift, grateful for any extra time with him, and willing to provide support for everything he was trying to do. As they began to make their way down the hallway he took her hand, slipping his fingers between hers, as if he didn't want to break contact any more than she did. And when she looked over at him she saw the hint of a smile on his lips. She loved seeing him happy, in some odd way it made her happy too. Still more looks were passed around them as the made their way out of the large school building. It was strange, even though they had seen the two together, seen that the two were capable of love, they were still scared by their presence; not that she cared in the slightest, she'd spent her last few years making sure they left her alone. So despite the curiosity of the other students they made it out of the building without anyone passing comment.
Once outside they made their way along the side walk that carved a path beside the road. As they walked he let go of her hand and put his arm around her shoulders instead but it didn't last long as a familiar cat made its appearance and rubbed against their legs, purring like the pair were his greatest joy in the world. "Halloween." They had both grown fond of their new furry friend. Stopping, she crouched down, her hair falling in her eyes again as she did so, her fingers dancing with the little creatures tail before she scratched between the cat's ears. She remembered the night with Dylan after his dare, telling him how she was going to have a cat one day. It wasn't a very deep comment, but it had been the furthest anyone had gotten with her. Though he'd sort of gotten beyond that now hadn't he? How the hell had he done that? How had he gotten into her head and become so very special?
