personality Dylan is a very insecure, troubled, combatant yet extremely intelligent individual. He's tough, he doesn't pick fights intentionally but when you decide to be an asshole you create enemies without even trying. He has learned to roll with the punches, take hits and throw the grenade back like in the third spiderman movie. In a lot of ways, he's become his mother: mean, infamous, and cruel. But he refuses to ever consider him like his mother. No, he'll claim he's nothing like him! And perhaps he isn't. After all, he can be so much deeper and thoughtful; he is an artist after all. Not only that but a private religious guy. Surprised? Yeah, that would surprise most everyone. He's sort of created his own religion. It's catholism, islam, jewish, buddhism, universalism, those dead poets and artist all rolled up into one. This religion he clings to is his way of clinging to his childhood, the innocense he feels he has forgotten in order to survive juvie. It's the side of him he actually likes but feels to afraid to expose. So what is exposed? His wacky, nearly OCD intensity when it comes to school, grades, arguments, conversation, contests, everything. He is intense, which makes him socially stupid. He gets lost in his own thoughts, blurt out something that was being discussed three conversations ago. Which makes him the joke of so many people. So he hides away alot, he's a loner. Either drawing, drinking, or writing essays. His attitude is all a fake mask that he made up so he could be cool in prison, unfortunately the person he has cultivated in his mind fails when he attempts to put it in practice. He knows this, so he withdraws socially again. He sticks his neck out with his art, pushing the envelope passive aggressively.
The thing he doesn't realize is just how compassionate and NICE he is. He tries so hard to be tough, cool, and indifferent- he fails so miserably but when it comes to being there for someone; he's there without second thought. It's not so much the guilt of his mother or brother, the hatred, anger, resentment, sorrows of years wasted in juvie, or all he's been through that drives him to his misery and angst. It's the fact that he couldn't protect his mother, can't seem to help his brother, can't seem to help or protect ANYONE that makes him want to drink himself to a night's sleep or to bury himself in school work. So he's self destructing, trying to be sufficient for himself only, but look where he is now? A loathed, lonely alcoholic. What's the point of life anymore? He wonders. He just wants to help someone to justify his pathetic existence. Suicide is always on his mind and when the bars close, where can he go? What needs to be realized is that he's really great at helping others. While he's not great at articulating affection, he can show it through thoughtful gestures and how he will bend over backwards for even a complete stranger. One person actually said he didn't know anything about love. That insult still bothers him. He wishes he can go back and tell him that he does know. He took three years in prison for his mom damn it! Love is sacrifice and selfless. Suicide is selfish. That's why suicide is scary... but maybe that sort of empty looking sacrifice will benefit everyone who's concern?
nightmares dying, really hurting someone, failing, bad grades, getting into drugs from temptation, more social embarassment, being beaten
daydreams dying, quit smoking, becoming an ER doctor, having friends, protecting someone, becoming more well-known as an artist, falling in love and starting a family, visiting the porziuncola church in italy
secrets the truth of his arrest, he's nice, suicidal, his mother was a prostitute
what they see Dylan is one of the school's best known loner. Due to some drama in the past, he's a character much talked and gossiped about. What did he do to get arrested? What could he have possibly done? What's going to ever happen with him and his brother? What's the next controversial painting he'll paint? Will he ever get an F on a test for goodness sakes? No one really likes him though. His blunt, awkward, cold, and sort of wacky demeanor is not becoming in anyone's opinion.

description
Dylan was the result of a night without protection when his mother was earning a living. She was a drug addicted prostitute. Dylan will always resent his mother for her choices and how he was concieved. He will rarely ever talk about it, it is the one thing he's truly embarassed of. She did get her act together, sort of, after various rehab stints and got a job as a nurse in wisconsin where she took care of Dylan as a child. She married Steven and together they began getting into the dog world- both of their passions. They would rescue a few dogs but mainly showed, bred, and herded with dogs. They would occasionaly dip into a few other breeds, such as the doberman pinscher or neopolitan mastiffs but they mainly concentrated on their lines of border collies. They even had sheep just to herd them. Needless to say, Dylan grew quite accostumed to the lifestyle.
They lived on a great piece of land out in the middle of nowhere but it was close enough to Dylan's school. He'd walk there. They lived in a trailer and on their piece of land, they'd have their dogs, sheep, a few horses, kennels, and ducks. Much like border collies, he grew up intense, wild, innocent, and obsessive. From the start, he was an artist. He was innocent and he loved to read. He loved to spend his days outside with the dogs. He was advanced in school and it didn't take long before he was going places. While Elizabeth was too busy training her dogs or drinking, [she was an awful and abusive drunk. quite a few times she hit Dylan when he was child] Dylan was studying. He dreamed of going to a very prestigious art academy in high school and then after that, an ivy league. Life was okay. He hated Steve but they left each other alone in solemn understanding. Dylan was one of those blunt kids, okay with being sarcastic and rude to his parents but he rarely broke the rules and he always did his chores. He'd even go the extra mile with the dogs when they needed him too. He spent many weekends going out of town for dog shows to help when he could've been hanging out with friends.
It was when he got his permit when things went south. His mother was sick and depressed, she was getting a divorce with Steve. Heartbroken, sick, and drunk, she told Dylan she was going to kill herself. Later that week she was involved with a hit and run. Except, she ran after trying to hide the body in the bushes. Dylan was walking home from taking the dogs for a walk when he found her panicking by the side of the road. She got down to the dogs, taking the leashes to be comforted. Dylan was upset and ran to the body, to see if he was alive or not. Having seen a dead body still affects him today. He threw up. Guess what happens? A police officer drove up and decided to see what's going on. His mother went on home with the dogs. Dylan was arrested.
Dylan would commit perjury to protect his already unstable mother and spend three years in juvie serving time for murder. All his dreams of academic were shattered, he missed his friends, home, and the dogs. But at least, maybe she would get her act together for him again. He never got any letters or visits from her. He became paranoid in there, it changed him and made him the jerk he is today. When he got out, he was homeless. His stepfather was nowhere to be found and his mother had been arrested and had committed suicide in jail. So after a few foster homes, he was sent here.[/blockquote]
